Degree Programs at Utah State University

Utah State University is one of the only comprehensive schools in the state to offer both associate and bachelor’s degree programs as well as graduate and doctoral tracks. The 17 associate degree programs that are available allow students to choose between studying subjects that will help them find immediate work or studying a field that they will later use in a bachelor’s program. Those subjects include general technology, agricultural science, criminal justice, small business operations, and ornamental horticulture. In the university’s cosmetology program, students learn how to apply makeup, do hair and work with health and beauty products. They also have the chance to work with real clients.
The more than 100 bachelor’s programs offered by the university include some unique majors such as rangeland ecology and management and military science. Students in the military science program will also work with the university’s ROTC program. Once they complete their degrees, they earn a commissioned spot in the Army. The rangeland program has accreditation from the Society for Range Management (SRM) and prepares students for working in the wetlands and other environmental areas. Utah State University also offers bachelor’s programs in fields that include conservation and restoration ecology, public health, food science, theater arts, fisheries and aquatic sciences, and mechanical engineering.
Many of the more than 80 graduate programs at the university include fieldwork and internships. Social work majors can expect to work for a government agency as they focus on working with the elderly or other special groups. Fitness promotion, dietetics administration, and similar programs require that students do internships that ask them to help clients develop better fitness plans and eating habits. Electrical engineering, computer science, landscape architecture, and marriage and family therapy are some of the other majors available for graduate students. Utah State University also offers doctoral programs in areas such as forestry, aerospace engineering, audiology, special education, watershed science and human development and family studies.
About Utah State University
Utah State University is a public university and the largest campus in the state in terms of the number of students who live there. Established in 1888 as an agricultural college, it uses the names Utah State and USU. Originally called the Agricultural College of Utah, it expanded beyond those initial subjects to show that it was a strong college that deserved the right to operate separately from the University of Utah. As the college grew, it became a full university and created three new campuses. Each of those campuses offers the same courses and programs as the main campus in Logan. The university also established cooperative education programs that now allow students to work in more than 30 organizations across Utah. While Washington Monthly ranks Utah State as the nation’s 12th best university, U.S. News and World Report listed USU on a list of the world’s best institutions of higher learning.
Utah State University Accreditation Details
The United States Department of Education only allows schools with regional accreditation to offer financial aid packages that include government funds for students. Utah State has this type of accreditation, which comes from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). This is the same accreditation that allows USU to award credits to transfer students after evaluating their transcripts. The dietetics program and the internship in that program have accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Utah State also has accreditation for its psychology, marriage and family therapy, audiology and other programs.
Utah State University Application Requirements
Undergrads applying to USU need to have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 or a GED score of at least 660. They also need to score a minimum of 17/900 on the ACT/SAT, not including the writing portion of either exam. The priority deadline for the Logan campus and all regional campuses is October first, but the university will continue accepting applications through the middle of December for the main campus and through the middle of January for all other campuses. In addition to an application, students need to pay a $50 application fee and submit both an official test score and transcripts from all schools and colleges they attended.
It’s important that students look closely at the admissions requirements of each graduate program offered by Utah State. Those requirements can change between programs and are different than the ones in place for undergrads. All programs ask for official transcripts and a completed application, and many also ask for a GRE/GMAT score. Some programs require a score within the 40th percentile on those exams. Graduate and doctoral students typically need a GPA of 3.0 or higher. They will also need to provide letters of recommendation or contact information for three professional and/or academic references. The final application deadline for the fall semester is July first, which is when USU must receive the student’s application, $55 application fee and all required information.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Utah State charges undergrads a tuition rate that starts at $951 for Utah residents. This price will slowly decrease as they sign up for more classes. Full-time residents can take up to 18 credits and pay only $3,830 per semester. Nonresident undergrads pay $2,250 for the first credit hour they take and $11,099 per semester for full-time enrollment. Both the university’s associate and bachelor’s programs charge the same rates. Full-time graduate students pay $4,419 to $14,079 per semester for full-time enrollment based on whether they are Utah residents or from a different state.
The university’s Tuition Installment Plan (TIP) is just one financial aid option available for students. This program asks that they pay a $50 set up fee and that they make four equal payments on their accounts. Students can sign up for a payment plan even if they receive financial aid. They get that aid after filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). USU students can get loans and a Pell grant or other grants from both the state and federal government and qualify for federal loans. Those who show more need on the FAFSA may receive acceptance into the work-study program too. Utah State University also offers institutional grants and scholarships for students in all of its degree programs.
