The University of West Georgia offers its students the choice of on-campus, hybrid, or online study in majors that range from the undergraduate to doctoral level. Popular majors at the university include those in business, the social sciences, various health professions, psychology, and education. The freshmen retention rate for the university is a respectable 72 percent.
There are fourteen colleges and divisions at the university with several departments operating within those divisions. Some of the divisions where students may study while at the university include the College of Arts and Humanities, the College of Science and Mathematics, and the College of Social Sciences. Additional departments include the Tanner Health System School of Nursing and the Richards College of Business.
Students who want to study online may enroll in undergraduate, master’s, specialist, and doctoral programs, as well as programs offering various certifications and endorsements. Students who choose an undergraduate program online at the University of West Georgia will be able to choose from majors like marketing, real estate, economics, accounting, and finance. Enrollees who choose a graduate program will enroll in programs like applied computer science, reading instruction, music education, and public administration.
Specialist degrees are available online in education, media, professional counseling, and special education. Doctoral degrees are offered in nursing, professional counseling, school improvement, and higher education administration. Certificates available online include a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems, a Post-Master’s Certificate in Nursing Education, or a Post-Master’s Certificate in Health Systems Leadership.
The university has an interesting program known as UWG eCore, where students can take core classes online that are typically required during the first two years of the average college degree program. Students may benefit from the convenience of earning their basic core classes via online learning, which allows for greater scheduling ease than on-campus classes.
When students complete their online core classes, they can continue into full degree programs online, or they can enroll in classes on one of the campuses of the universities in Georgia. The university also has other extra programs available through its University College, like its interdisciplinary studies program, special first-year programs, and the Center for Academic Success.
About the University of West Georgia
The University of West Georgia was founded in 1906 as the Fourth District A&M School. The school is part of the state’s university system, and its main campus is located in Carrollton, Georgia. Covering 645 acres, the campus serves more than 13,700 students and also offers classes in Atlanta and Douglasville. The school is a research university, and the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education classifies it as an R3 – Doctoral University.
The school’s official colors are blue and red, and the sports teams are nicknamed the Wolves when they place in the Gulf South Conference in NCAA Division II games. The school’s official mascot is named Wolfie. The university has been growing in recent years, and its overall enrollment numbers reached a record in 2018 with more growth expected in the ensuing years.
University of West Georgia Accreditation Details
Regional accreditation for the University of West Georgia comes from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges. Accreditation allows the university to award college degrees. The most recent reaffirmation of the university’s accreditation occurred in 2014. Various independent organizations have also accredited programs, colleges, and departments at the university. Accreditations come from the American Chemical Society, which has approved the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.
The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International has accredited several business programs at the university offered by the Richards College of Business and its Departments of Accounting and Finance, Economics, Management, Management Information Systems, and Marketing and Real Estate. Additional accreditations have been granted by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, and the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language-Pathology.
University of West Georgia Application Requirements
Students enrolling as first-year students or freshmen will need to send a non-refundable application fee of $40, their official high school transcripts, and scores from the SAT or ACT. The college may require additional documents from some students that include a MOWR participation agreement, West in Thirty participation agreement, or a transfer conditional acceptance contract. The university recommends that students send materials early to avoid missing the application deadline.
The University of West Georgia has different application requirements for its master’s degrees, doctoral degrees, specialist degrees, and certificate programs. Most programs have similar admissions requirements for basic materials, however. Applying requires an online application, official transcripts, and GRE scores. Students should check with their intended program via the official university website to determine any additional program-specific requirements.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition is based on the number of credits in which a student enrolls. Undergraduate students who are residents of Georgia will pay $2,132 for 12 hours, $2,665 for 15+ hours, or $177.67 per credit hour. A meal plan will cost between $1,676 and $2,384, and housing will cost from $2,450 to $3,450. Books are estimated to cost an additional $600. Students can expect to pay anywhere from $7,838 to $10,080 a year.
Out-of-state students will pay increased tuition of $7,524 to $9,406, which equals $627.07 per credit. The overall cost of attendance for out-of-state students is estimated at $13,231 to $16,821. For graduate students, the in-state rate is $6,110, and the out-of-state rate is $17,900. Some programs at the university have additional costs for materials, technology, and equipment.
All students who want to qualify for financial aid at the university must submit their FAFSA form, and all required fees must be paid by August 21 before the fall semester begins. Students may receive a Federal Work-Study award, Pell Grants, various scholarships, and student loans from the government or private entities. Students may apply for scholarships directly through the university or from private entities.
Students who are residents of Georgia may want to look into the HOPE Scholarship or the Zell Miller Scholarship, which are awarded to new students. The Zell Miller Scholarship is available to graduates of Georgia high schools who have earned a minimum 3.7 GPA, as well as achieved a minimum 1200 on the SAT or 26 on the ACT. Students at the University of West Georgia may also qualify for the HOPE Scholarship if they have a minimum of 3.0 for their GPA.
