The University of Nevada – Reno, or UNR, offers a wide range of degrees and programs for students at all stages of their educational careers. Students can choose to study at the traditional campus or online.
UNR offers master’s level degrees through its online campus. Students can study to receive a master of accountancy, cybersecurity, reading curriculum, equity and diversity in education, public health, business analytics or social work. Students can also study for an MBA or a doctor of nursing.
Students who wish to obtain undergraduate degrees can study on campus. The university is divided into eight colleges and nine different schools. Bachelor’s degrees are offered in more than 70 fields, from Accounting to Women’s Studies.
Undergraduate requirements may vary based on which program a student follows. Most students must complete core courses that include a minimum of three English, mathematics, humanities, fine arts, and speech course credits. They must have a minimum of six credits in social sciences and natural sciences. They must also complete a constitution course called American Experiences and Constitutional Change.
Students can also pursue both master’s and doctoral degrees at the traditional campus. UNR offers one of the country’s only Basque studies programs, in which students can achieve a Ph.D. Other fields that are somewhat unique to UNR are Hydrogeology and Mineral Resource Engineering. The school also offers certificates and licensure in fields like renewable energy, teaching English as a second language, social justice, and many others.
About the University of Nevada – Reno
UNR is the flagship university of the University of Nevada system. It was originally established in Elko, Nevada in 1874. The school remained in Elko until 1904 when it moved to its permanent home in Reno. Through the 1960s, UNR remained the only four-year university in the state of Nevada.
UNR is the largest university in Nevada with an undergraduate population of almost 18,000 and a post-graduate population of more than 3,000. The university has a booming online presence where it offers master’s degrees and a doctorate degree to students in the state and beyond.

University of Nevada – Reno Accreditation Details
UNR is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. UNR must undergo evaluations every seven years to maintain its accreditation. This accreditation allows UNR to provide associate, undergraduate, master’s and doctorate degrees. It also covers all certificate programs. Some individual programs may hold additional accreditations from professional organizations that specialize in those areas.
University of Nevada – Reno Application Requirements
Students have different avenues for applying depending upon whether they wish to pursue an undergraduate or post-graduate degree. Students interested in studying online can simply complete a short questionnaire to get started with the graduate school application. Students simply need to reveal which course of study they plan to pursue, complete information about work experience and previous education, provide contact information and upload a resume or CV. Once this is completed, an enrollment advisor will be in touch and help to guide the student the rest of the way through the online application process.
Applicants to the traditional campus complete a simple online application. Students must have official transcripts from any high school or college they have previously attended sent directly to UNR. They must also supply standardized test scores, immunization records, and the $60 application fee.
Incoming freshmen must have completed four English language or composition courses while in high school. They must have also completed three units of mathematics, social sciences, and natural sciences. They must also have passed all of these courses with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Students need to have taken an ACT with a minimum score of 22 or an SAT with a minimum combined score of 1120.

Tuition and Financial Aid
Graduate students pay the same rate whether they study online or at the UNR campus. The registration fee for graduate classes is $285.75 per credit hour for Nevada residents. Students from outside of the state are charged at a rate of $314.25 per hour. Other fees for traditional students are required for technology, health center, counseling services, performing arts, student union, fitness center, and academic success. Online students must pay an online fee of $34 per credit and other fees as needed.
Undergraduate students pay approximately $233 per credit hour if they are Nevada state residents. Out-of-state students are charged a yearly rate of about $15,000 per year if they are enrolled full-time. Part-time non-resident students are charged about $256 per credit hour.
Tuition costs rise most years. UNR uses predictive pricing to let students know exactly what increases they will experience over the course of a four or five-year college career.
Students can use scholarship money to pay for undergraduate and graduate classes, including those that take place online. UNR offers institutional scholarships that are both need- and merit-based. Merit-based scholarships are often awarded to incoming freshmen. These students can receive automatic scholarships of up to $8,000 per year based on their excellent grades and test scores.
The university also accepts private scholarships to help with paying tuition. Students should reveal any and all private scholarships they have received at the time financial aid and payments are being planned.
Students can use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, to determine their eligibility for need-based grants and scholarships. Those students who do not believe they will qualify for need-based scholarships should complete the FAFSA as well. The FAFSA is used to access work-study and certain student loans.
Any student that is non-degree seeking, whether studying online or in person, is not eligible for state or federal financial aid.
