With online degree programs available at the top three levels, the University of Maryland University College offers options for students of any age who live anywhere in the world. Undergrads have more than 30 majors that they can choose from, including software development and security, legal studies and human resource management. The university’s homeland security program teaches students how to investigate crimes and process evidence, which can help them work for this and other government departments. History, graphic communication, business administration, and digital media and web technology are some of the other majors available. Students can complement their degrees with minors in fields such as computer science, biology, criminal justice, cybersecurity, and political science too.
There are 18 programs available at the graduate level, including a teaching program. Students in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program will do an 18-week internship that includes teaching and direct contact with students. The university’s digital forensics and cyber investigation program gives students the chance to do internships too and work with leading government and law enforcement agencies. In the environmental management program, students learn how to manage and operate environmental groups and organizations. The University of Maryland University College also offers graduate programs in distance education and e-learning, management, instructional technology, data analytics, and business administration.
The two doctoral programs offered by the university allow students to study either business administration or management in community college policy and administration. While the first program focuses on business areas, the second program looks at the administration of secondary and vocational schools. The 48 credits of classes in this administration program include Foundations of Management Theory, Research Methods, and Leadership and Change. Though both programs also have a dissertation requirement, they allow students to do that work online.
About the University of Maryland University College
The University of Maryland University College is a public university in Adelphi, Maryland that offers online courses and programs. Also known as UMUC, it was established in 1947. Prior to the 1940s, it operated as a night school that was part of the University of Maryland. This school would become a full college that offered continuing education programs in the 1940s and adopt the UMUC name in 1959. It is now separate from the University of Maryland but is a member of the university system in the state. UMUC announced in 2019 that it would change its name to the University of Maryland Global Campus to reflect the commitment it has to online students and to show that programs are open to students from around the world. Students can earn more than 50 degrees and more than 80 certificates through the university.
University of Maryland University College Accreditation Details
The accreditation held by UMUC includes the regional accreditation granted by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Both the nursing and the business programs offered by the university have accreditation too that applies to the undergraduate and graduate options. UMUC also has accreditation for its education programs that prepare students for careers in this field, which comes from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
University of Maryland University College Application Requirements
UMUC accepts both high school graduates and students who have a GED as well as those who earned degrees from community colleges. Students need to provide their high school transcripts to show that they finished those programs or some type of proof that they have their equivalency certificates. Though UMUC does not require an ACT/SAT score, it does ask for college transcripts from those who earned at least 24 credit hours. Students who have grade point averages of below 2.0 will only receive provisional acceptance. They can only take seven credit hours of courses to start. After showing the university that they can handle college courses, they can increase the number of credits taken each semester.
A nonrefundable application fee and a completed application are some of the requirements of students hoping to earn a graduate degree from UMUC. They must also have a bachelor’s degree from a university or college that has full accreditation. UMUC allows graduate students to take up to six credits of classes before it will require their official transcripts. They can use unofficial transcripts to show the progress they made towards their degrees but will need to provide official paperwork to show they finished those degrees. The university may also ask for references, letters of recommendation, writing samples, test scores and other types of information, though this depends on the individual program. There are similar requirements for those applying to a doctoral program.
Tuition and Financial Aid
All the undergrad programs available at UMUC charge students $300 per credit hour if they are also residents of Maryland. Residents in most graduate programs will pay $480 per credit hour, but those in a specialty graduate program will pay $694 per credit hour, which includes majors in cybersecurity management and data analytics. The university’s doctoral programs charge residents $1,087 per credit hour. Students who do not qualify for the UMUC in-state rate will pay $499 per credit hour in an undergrad program and $659 per credit hour in a graduate program. The costs of its doctoral and specialty graduate programs remain the same. UMUC also offers a discount for military students and the spouses and children of those in the military. Those students pay $250 per credit hour in an undergrad program and $458 per credit hour in a graduate program.
Most of the students who attend UMUC will receive financial aid, which they get when they complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Those who have degrees from a Maryland community college and a GPA of at least 2.0 can qualify for a scholarship of up to $12,000 to finish a bachelor’s degree. Scholarships of up to $9,000 are available for students who live in a neighboring state such as Pennsylvania. UMUC will look at the applications it receives and notify students who qualify for its scholarships on how they can apply. Students also qualify for grants and other types of aid that include federal student loans.
