About The University of Illinois-Springfield
The first plans for the university started in 1960 when a group of citizens joined together and created the Springfield Committee for Higher Education. The official legislature agreement was signed in 1969 and by 1970, the very first classes were being prepared. The institution was first recognized as Sangamon State University with its sister schools being recognized as Governors State University in Park Forest which was established in 1971. By 1995 Sangamon State University changes its name to The University of Illinois-Springfield. The campus is located on a modest 746 acres and is 200 miles southwest of the City of Chicago.
The U.S. News & World Report ranks UIS in the top 15th percent for Midwest universities. In the state of Illinois, the university is ranked 1st and 4th overall in the midwest. The University of Illinois-Springfield has a large pool of alumni that have joined the workforce in the state of Illinois. Overall, the student body is comprised of 4,275 members with 2,674 of those being undergraduates and 1,601 being graduate students. The student body boasts diversity and students come from several American states and a number of foreign countries.
Life on campus is active, and students can involve themselves in one of the 85+ clubs and organizations that are readily available. The athletic teams participate at the NCAA DII level as members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The University of Illinois-Springfield Application Requirements
First-year undergraduate students should have completed a satisfactory curriculum at the high school level; GED scores are acceptable as well. Students should have taken at least four years of English, three years of social studies, three years of mathematics, three years of lab science and two years of a foreign language. Students should submit their class rank, GPA, SAT or ACT scores, a personal statement, and official high school transcripts. A $50 application fee is required for official admissions consideration.
Graduate students should prepare proof of a baccalaureate degree by providing official transcripts, a minimum GPA of 2.5, and other supplemental documents depending on the program of choice. Graduates should include a $75 application fee to be considered.
Tuition and Financial Aid
First-year undergraduate students who are residents of the state but live at home will have a tuition of $19,131.60. First-year students who are residents of the state and live on campus will pay a tuition of $23,491.60. Students who are nonresidents and reside on campus will pay a tuition of $31,111.60. These prices are based on a 12-credit hour curriculum and the price includes the cost of books and supplies, room and board, miscellaneous expenses and transportation fees.
First-year students who are residents of the state, living at home, and taking at least 15-credit hours will pay $21,123.00. Residents of the state residing on campus and taking 15-credit hours will pay $25,483. For nonresidents living on campus and taking 15-credit hours, tuition will be $35,008.
First-year students who are members of the Honors College, are residents of the state and taking 12-credit hours will pay $24,191.60. Nonresidents will pay $31,811.60. Resident honors students taking 15-credit hours will pay $26,183 and non-residents will pay $35,708.
Graduate students who are residents of the state, live at home and are taking no more than 8 credit hours will pay $16,664.40. State residents taking no more than 8 credit hours and reside on campus will pay $17,864.40. Graduates who live in family housing will pay $23,439.40. Residents of the state residing off-campus will pay $20,039.40. Nonresidents who are taking no more than 8 credit hours will pay $25,575.40.
All students can apply for financial aid in the form of a grant, loan, scholarship or work-study program. On average, 66% of undergraduate and first-year students receive financial aid in the form of a scholarship from The University of Illinois-Springfield with award amounts totaling $11,419.
