Texas Southern University was established in 1927 and is a historically black university located in the city of Houston, Texas. The school has more than 10,000 students attending its urban, 150-acre campus. The popular sports teams at the university are known as the Tigers, and they participate in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The university also hosts an excellent marching band known as the Ocean of Soul. The university’s official colors are gray and maroon.
When the university was established, the Houston Independent School District was segregated, and the decision was made to create public facilities divided by race. The university was originally known as Houston Colored Junior College, and classes were first held at a local high school. The Texas Legislature would elevate the school to university status in 1947.
