About Simmons University

Established in 1899, Simmons University is a comprehensive university in Boston, Massachusetts. John Simmons lived and worked in Boston where he ran a large clothing company. He felt that women deserved the chance to study at the college level and helped establish a private university just for women. The university has a liberal arts curriculum from its early days. It grew after admitting black students and after taking over Garland Junior College and all its programs. Simmons now offers one of the only MBA programs in the nation designed for women. This program includes courses on how to succeed in the business industry and on other topics that women need to know about. The university was only the third women’s school in the nation to accept both students who identify as female and those born female.

Known as Simmons College for more than a century, the school adopted the Simmons University in 2018 after changing its curriculum. The campus is close to many historic sites in Boston and often appears on tours. Simmons has an Undergraduate College and a College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Studies as well as four schools, including the School of Social Work and the School of Management. While the undergrad programs still only accept women, the graduate programs accept a small number of men each year. Simmons University saw its enrollment grow to more than 2,000 undergrads and more than 2,600 post-graduate students in recent years.
