Ottawa University offers a large selection of accredited degree programs from four physical campuses and an online college. Students at Ottawa can choose from a selection of about 40 undergraduate degrees and seven graduate degrees available at the Arizona, Indiana, Kansas and Wisconsin campuses. The online college offers a slightly smaller selection of undergraduate degrees as well as the full range of graduate programs offered on each physical campus.
From accounting to counseling, history, music, and nursing, the undergraduate programs offered on the physical campuses are designed to prepare students for fulfilling careers in a wide range of industries. The online college offers a carefully chosen selection of accredited undergraduate degree programs, including human resources, public safety, mathematics, psychology, history and business administration. Whether undergraduate students choose to attend classes online or in person, they can expect to have a unique and comprehensive educational experience. The graduate degrees offered at the physical campuses and online college include the Master of Science in Nursing, Master of Business Administration, Master of Arts in Leadership, Master of Accountancy, Master of Arts in Education, Master of Arts in Counseling and Master of Arts in Human Resources. These master’s programs take about two years of full-time enrollment to complete, and they can all be completed in person or entirely online. Students of the residential colleges may choose to enroll in a mixed schedule of online and campus-based courses.
The physical campuses offer students a range of choices when it comes to degree majors and academic specialization. While the tuition costs are the same for in-state and out-of-state residents, the programs offered by each regional campus vary, and students looking for degree programs in healthcare, accountancy, kinesiology, theater arts, sports studies or another specialized discipline may have to relocate to a nearby campus for enrollment. The Kansas campus offers the largest range of undergraduate programs while the Indiana campus offers the fewest programs. About Ottawa University
Ottawa University was founded in the 1860s by Baptist missionaries in Ottawa, Kansas. At the time of the founding of Ottawa University, the town of Ottawa had not yet been established. The area of Kansas where the school would eventually be constructed was populated by the indigenous Ottawa Nation of Native Americans. The native Ottawa population participated fully in the conception and construction of the university. When the board of trustees of the college was originally formed, it consisted of four Native Americans and two Baptist missionaries. The Native American members of the board were instrumental in deciding on the location and construction of the original campus. The Baptist settlers of the Ottawa, Kan., area purchased 5,000 acres of land from the Ottawa tribe, and the first Ottawa University was built in 1865.
More than 150 years later, Ottawa University is one of the top online colleges in the country, with 15 undergraduate programs and seven master’s programs available for students in any location. The Ottawa campus educates approximately 600 undergraduate students and 30 master’s students each year. Ottawa University Accreditation Details
Ottawa University is a regionally accredited college. It has received institutional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The HLC is federally approved to accredit institutions of higher learning throughout 19 states in the Midwest and Southwest. Regional accreditation is the most rigorous and trusted form of accreditation in the country, so students at Ottawa can rest assured that their credits will transfer to other institutions. In addition to the university’s institutional accreditation, several undergraduate and graduate programs at Ottawa are accredited by independent associations. Teacher education programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and nursing programs at the baccalaureate level are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
Ottawa University Application Requirements
With an acceptance rate of 50 percent and a graduation rate of 31 percent, Ottawa University offers students a rewarding educational experience. Application requirements are similar for undergraduate and graduate students on all campuses. At the time of application, freshmen applicants must submit a high school transcript or proof of GED. Transfer applications must include a university transcript with at least 30 hours of credit from an accredited college. Graduate school applicants must provide proof of a bachelor’s degree as well as written recommendations from past professors. Because Ottawa is a selective university, applications are reviewed multiple times to ensure that each student has the skills and experience needed to perform at a high level. The deadline for fall enrollment is March 1 while the deadline for spring enrollment is November 1. Online programs have the same schedule as campus-based programs, so application deadlines are the same for all programs.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition at Ottawa costs around $27,000 per year for students of all colleges and campuses. An additional $14,000 per year will be needed for books and living expenses for most students. The total yearly cost of education at Ottawa is around $41,000 before financial aid has been calculated. When financial aid is included, students can expect to pay an average of around $21,000 per year for tuition, books and living expenses.
Financial aid is available from several federally approved sources. Students can apply for aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid website. The FAFSA program offers students access to Pell Grants and public loans that may be subsidized by the federal government. Subsidized loans don’t accumulate interest while the borrower maintains half-time enrollment status, but unsubsidized loans begin accruing interest right away. Both types of public loans must be repaid in full, including any interest accrued, beginning three months after the borrower drops below half-time enrollment status. Approval for public loans and grants is based on the financial need of the borrower. Students can also apply for private loans, scholarships, and grants through the financial aid office at Ottawa University.
