With a main campus in Corvallis, Oregon, Oregon State University attracts students from all 50 states and in excess of 100 countries. The institution boasts the second-ranked forestry program and the third-ranked oceanography program in the world. More than 32,000 students enroll in OSU’s academic degree programs each year. Eighty-three percent of these students are undergraduates with the remaining students enrolling in graduate and professional programs. Oregonians make up 56 percent of the student population.
With a more than 150-year history, OSU now boasts two campuses and 11 colleges and offers more than 200 academic programs. The prestigious institution also features 14 experiment stations, is a top one-percent university in the world and is one of only two U.S. universities to receive a land, sea, space and sun grants.
OSU’s academic colleges include Agricultural Sciences, Business, Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences; Education; Engineering; Forestry; Liberal Arts; Pharmacy; Public Health and Human Services; Science and Veterinary Science. In addition to offering on-campus programs for diverse degree areas such as the B.S. in Health Management and Policy and the B.S. in Forest Management, students may choose from more than 25 online and hybrid degree programs. These include a B.A. or B.S. in anthropology, a B.A. or B.S. in Business Administration, a B.A. or B.S. in History and a B.A. or B.S. in Psychology, among others. At the graduate level, students may select from among certificate and degree programs in an array of study areas such as Business, Natural Resource Sciences, Science and Engineering, Public Health, Public Policy, Adult Education and Higher Education Leadership and Teacher and Counselor Education, many of which also are available online.
With accelerated programs and an honors program that confers degrees, there are many options for obtaining a higher education at OSU. Students may attend on a full- or part-time basis, and with a network of student resources, each individual is provided with the tools for success.
Among the faculty and alumni, there are the inventors of the artificial heart valve, the Leatherman tool, the computer mouse and even the modern dentist’s chair. These individuals are entrepreneurs as well, having established companies such as U-Haul, E-TRADE and Panda Express. About Oregon State University
A public research, land grant university, OSU was established in 1856. It initially specialized in education of a primary and preparatory nature, and it underwent no fewer than 11 changes of name. College-level courses began being offered after the first decade, with the school being officially chartered as a college in 1868. At the time, it was an agricultural college. The first four decades of the 20th century brought increasing academic diversity, and on March 6, 1961, the institution was officially designated as Oregon State University by the governor.
U.S. News & World Report designates admissions to OSU as “selective,” with the average GPA for entering students being 3.56. The publication further ranks OSU as 143 in the nation and 218 on a global level.

Oregon State University Accreditation Details
The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities accredits OSU as an institution. This accreditation is evaluated every 10 years with the most recent evaluation occurring in 2011. With this credential, the college is able to confer degrees at the baccalaureate, master’s, doctorate and professional levels. Oregon State University Application Requirements
First-year undergraduate students are subject to a competitive admissions process that looks at the totality of their academic and personal achievements. Admissions staff reviews the strength of the high school curriculum, GPA and class rank in addition to scores from the SAT or ACT. Students also must submit an “Insight Resume” concerning their accomplishments and goals. Individuals applying to attend online are not required to submit this document. Typically, students must hold a diploma from an accredited high school, though exceptions may be made.
Graduate students also undergo a competitive process that examines their academic performance and likelihood of succeeding in the chosen program. A four-year baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and passing a review of behavior and background are among the minimum requirements. Individual programs may require GRE scores, letters of recommendation, statements of intent, a CV, an interview and other documentation.
Tuition and Financial Aid
In-state undergraduate students pay $312 per credit hour for the 2019-2020 academic school year. Students who choose certain programs may pay more per credit hour. For example, engineering students may pay $346 per credit hour while forestry students may pay $327 per credit hour. Non-resident undergrads pay a base per credit hour rate of $967.
At the graduate level, students pay $479 per credit hour. Once again, certain colleges charge at a higher rate such as the College of Business, which charges $775 per credit hour.
A variety of financial aid is available to qualifying students. This aid includes loans, grants, and scholarships. Federal work study also is available on campus. While loans must be repaid, grants and scholarships do not. OSU maintains a scholarship website on which students may search for appropriate scholarships based on their academic program, ethnicity and other factors
