Northeastern University is a private research institution located in Boston, Massachusetts. It is classified as an R1 university, so it is authorized to grant doctoral degrees in a wide range of disciplines. Most students at Northeastern are undergraduate students who live on campus in Boston. The main campus is the only location that offers undergraduate degree programs. The satellite campuses in Charlotte, Seattle, Silicon Valley and Toronto offer a wide range of graduate programs. The online school offers a mix of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.

As with all of the educational programs at Northeastern, the Ph.D. programs are designed to be highly experiential and focused on practical application of the concepts. In all, Northeastern offers 34 doctoral programs, including biology, bioengineering, biomedical science, chemical engineering, computer science, English, history and many others. Most of the doctoral programs at Northeastern are based in the scientific disciplines, but several programs are available in the liberal arts. The Ph.D. programs in the humanities are based on experiential teaching methods and student internships. About Northeastern University
Northeastern University was founded in 1898 as the Evening Institute for Younger Men, a professional nighttime training academy associated with the newly constructed YMCA. The institute consisted of a law school as well as the country’s first automobile engineering school. Less than a decade after opening its doors, the Evening Institute for Younger Men established the School of Commerce and Finance. It began offering daytime classes in 1909. In 1916, after months of debate in the Massachusetts legislature, the name of the school was changed to Northeastern College. Over the next six years, many new academic programs were added to the curriculum, and in 1922, the school’s name was changed to Northeastern University to represent the wide range of degree options.
Northeastern continued to expand its degree offerings over the years, and in 1935, the College of Liberal Arts was added to the campus. Thirteen years later, Northeastern University officially separated from the YMCA and became an independent degree-granting institution. In the 1940s, Northeastern began admitting female students, and over the next several decades, it established departments of education, pharmacology, nursing, criminal justice, computer science and several others. During the 1980s, enrollment at Northeastern exceeded 50,000 students, and that number dropped over the following two decades as the administration sought to cultivate a more selective university. Today, Northeastern is consistently ranked in the top 40 to 50 universities in the country.
Northeastern University Accreditation Details
Northeastern University is institutionally accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) to award a wide range of associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees to students of the residential and online programs. Many departments and individual degree programs are programmatically accredited by specialized agencies. The Bouvé College of Health Sciences is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and several others. The College of Arts, Media and Design is accredited by the National Architectural Accreditation Board (NAAB). The D’Amore-McKim School of Business is accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). As new specialized programs are added to the curriculum, additional programmatic accreditations are also added. Each accreditation must be renewed every 10 years.
Northeastern University Application Requirements
Students must submit their applications by January 1 for fall enrollment and by November 1 for spring enrollment. Freshmen applicants must include a high school transcript or GED documentation with their applications. Transcripts must contain information about GPA, class size, class ranking and course schedule. Students applying to transfer to Northeastern must include a college transcript from an accredited university with their applications. Students applying for graduate programs must include an official college transcript with proof of a bachelor’s degree. All applications must include SAT, ACT or GRE test scores, and graduate school applications must include three written recommendations from professors. The middle 50 percent of applicants admitted in 2018 had high school GPA scores between 4.1 and 4.5, ACT scores between 33 and 35 and SAT scores between 1450 and 1540. Tuition and Financial Aid
Admissions at Northeastern University are competitive, and the acceptance rate is about 28 percent. Tuition costs for all students and programs are about $47,653 per year, and the cost of books and living expenses can increase the price by about $12,000 to $20,000 per year. Many forms of financial aid are available for students of all income levels. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) website provides an application form for low-cost federal loans and grants available to students with financial need. Federally subsidized loans do not begin to accrue interest until three months after the student drops below half-time status. Unsubsidized loans start to accrue interest immediately but do not need to be repaid until three months after the student drops below half-time status. Northeastern University offers a wide range of scholarships, grants and work-study programs for all students, regardless of their family’s income.
