About Northeastern State University
Northeastern State University is the oldest institution of higher learning in Oklahoma. It was founded in 1846 as the Cherokee Nation Female Seminary, and it retains its historic connection to the Cherokee Nation and Indian Territory. In 1909, the Cherokee Nation Female Seminary became a public education institution when it was purchased by the Oklahoma legislature and renamed the Oklahoma State Normal School. The name was changed to Northeastern State University in 1939, and today the school is the fourth-largest institution of higher education in Oklahoma.
NSU consists of three brick-and-mortar campuses as well as an online learning system. Students can choose from over 60 majors and 58 undergraduate and 24 graduate degree programs. Northeastern State University Accreditation Details
NSU consists of eight separate colleges and departments. It was accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools of the Higher Learning Commission in 2012, and it is scheduled to be accredited again in 2022. Six specialized programs are accredited separately from the university’s main accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission, and six accredited internships and residency programs are available.
The College of Education at Northeastern State University is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Teacher Preparation (CAEP), which was formed from the consolidation of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC). The nursing programs at NSU are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) as well as the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Social work degree programs are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
Northeastern State University Application Requirements
A student can enroll at NSU for the fall or spring semester as a freshman or transfer student. The requirements for undergraduate enrollment are easy for most students to meet. Undergraduates must have a high school diploma or an equivalent education, including four years of English, three years of natural science, math, history and civics and two years of a foreign language, computer science or another elective. The total amount of high school credits required for enrollment at Northeastern State University is 15 credit hours.
Prior to enrollment, students must complete a comprehensive battery of assessment tests, such as the ACT or SAT. In order to be accepted as an incoming freshman or transfer student, a matriculant must have a high school grade point average of at least 2.7 out of a possible 4.0. Grades from high school honors courses count the same as grades from regular courses when applying for enrollment at NSU. Graduate students applying for enrollment in a master’s program must have at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition at Northeastern State University is generally affordable. The cost per credit hour for undergraduate courses ranges from around $220 to $617, with most courses costing under $300 per credit hour.
In addition to grants and loans, NSU students are eligible for a wide range of scholarships. Before enrolling for the school year, students are encouraged to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online and submit a copy to NSU. Students can manage their financial aid during their time at NSU through the Office of Student Financial Services or by logging into the website. After enrolling in classes, students are assigned ID numbers with which to log into the university website and manage their account details.
