Great Basin College offers degrees in the areas of business, computer technology, education, health sciences, social services, the arts, and science. The college also offers several degrees in technology and industry for career-focused and technical education students. Associate’s degrees and bachelor’s degrees are offered, as well as certificates and post-baccalaureate programs.
One of the unique features of the programs offered at Great Basin College is the Skills Certificates series of programs, which help students gain valuable job skills for future employment. Skills certificates are available in areas like welding, nursing, emergency medical technician, industrial millwright, medical coding & billing, network specialist, office technology, pipe welding, and real estate salesperson.
Students who enroll in distance education classes take classes that are designed in the same way as on-campus classes. Students take their online classes through the school’s WebCampus. Most classes require that students finish their work on a timeline set by the college, so courses aren’t usually designed in a self-paced format. Degrees at every available level may be completed online in several subjects.
Certificates of achievement, which require one year of study, are available online in the areas of office technology, medical coding & billing, early childhood education, and business administration, as well as a handful of other areas. Students may seek an associate of science degree in similar areas if they’re interested in a program that will take two years to complete.
Associate’s degrees include those in criminal justice, computer programming, human services, and entrepreneurship. Other associate’s degrees are available in business, accounting, graphic communication, early childhood education, and office technology. Associate of arts degrees are offered in business, English, social science, graphic communication, and early childhood education.
At the bachelor’s degree level, students can earn a bachelor of applied science in areas like land surveying, digital information technology, graphic communications, or management & supervision. The college also offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing online, a Bachelor of Arts in English online, and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science online. These online programs are available for Nevada students, as well as students living anywhere else in the world who have access to a computer and the internet.
Some of the other topics that may require students to study some or all of their classes on campus include human resources, real estate licensure, the paramedic emphasis of emergency medical services, the Certificate of Achievement for Spanish Interpreter, and the Certificate of Achievement for Substance Abuse Counselor.
The college also offers degrees that are designed as “transfer friendly” programs that students can complete and then move onto other four-year institutions. Those degrees include Associate of Science degrees in Biological Sciences, Engineering, Natural Resources, Geoscience, Arts, and Science. Students can also earn an Associate of General Studies, which is for students who already have some college experience in various areas and want to enter a degree completion program.

Great Basin College has around 3.800 students enrolled for classes at its Elko, Nevada location and is part of the Nevada System of Higher Education. The school was once known as Elko Community College and was later known as Northern Nevada Community College. The school’s official colors are green and gold, and the school’s mascot is the Bighorn Sheep.
The school was established after billionaire Howard Hughes bestowed a gift of $250,000 to help establish the college. Most of the degrees at Great Basin College are designed to provide career and technical education in areas like science, education, and nursing. Great Basin College Accreditation Details
Regional accreditation for Great Basin College comes from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, which is the official postsecondary accrediting agency and is approved by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the United States Department of Education.
The school underwent a mid-cycle evaluation in 2016 and completed its self-evaluation report in 2014. The college also has a few programmatic accreditations for its programs. The associate’s degree and bachelor’s degree programs in nursing are both accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. The program in radiologic technology is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.
Great Basin College Application Requirements
Great Basin College maintains open admission for its prospective students but does have some prerequisites for some courses and programs. Students can apply online for classes at the college and are encouraged to speak with one of the school’s advisors after applying to ensure the student is fully prepared and eligible to enroll in the programs of his or her choice.
Students must prove they are residents of Nevada to receive in-state tuition and will need to submit proof of residency during the application process. Students who have already attended classes at Great Basin College in the past can simply call the admissions helpline to be reactivated as a student and don’t need to submit another application.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition at Great Basin College for in-state students is $104.25 per credit for lower division classes and $167.25 for upper division classes. A class load of 12 credits for lower division classes is $1,251.00, and a class load of 12 credits for upper division classes is $2,007.00. High school students will pay half that rate for lower division classes when they enroll concurrently while still in high school.
For non-residents, the fee for one credit is $213.00 for lower division classes and $345.25 for upper division classes. A full-time course load of 12 is $4,707.50 for lower division classes and $5,463.50 for upper division classes. Students who only attend classes online will pay the non-resident rate. All tuition fees also include a registration fee and a technology fee.
Students who enroll for classes at Great Basin College can apply for traditional student loans and may also qualify for scholarships. Young students may qualify for Federal Parent Loans where the student’s parents cosign or apply for loans, and older students may borrow through the student loan program without assistance from parents or family members.
Nevada residents may be eligible for scholarships and should complete a FAFSA form to qualify for need-based and academic-based grants and scholarships. Students who graduate from a Nevada high school may qualify for the Millennium Scholarship when they attend Great Basin College.
