Degree Programs at Goodwin College

Goodwin College appears in our ranking of the Top ten Online Colleges for Associates Degrees.

Goodwin College is a small college in Connecticut that focuses on career training for students. Its programs provide students with the fundamental training that they need to work in a health care field or another industry. Some of the classes available in those programs follow a hybrid format. Students will work online and at home, but they will also visit the campus one or more times each semester to work with their professors and other students. The college also offers a general studies associate degree program online, which lets students study multiple subjects and get a degree that they can transfer into almost any bachelor’s program. Students can earn associate degrees through traditional programs in fields such as early childhood education, medical assisting, respiratory care and human services.

Students can earn several bachelor’s degrees from the college through either online or traditional studies. One online program is an RN to BSN program designed for nurses who already have work experience but want to further their studies. Business majors can earn degrees in management and leadership or business administration. While the administration program includes courses on laws and ethics, the management and leadership program focuses more on teaching students how to lead and manage others in the workplace. The college also offers degree programs in public health and professional studies that students can complete online. Students can choose between taking 15-week classes or 7.5-week classes. Most of its traditional bachelor’s programs include evening courses, including those in child care, health science, environmental studies, and public safety and security.

Two graduate programs are also available online: a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL). Both programs include 20 months of work and allow students to enroll part-time. The organizational leadership program is available in a hybrid format for those who need the help and support available on the college’s campus. Goodwin College requires that students take placement tests in math and English before they can take any online classes.

About Goodwin College

Goodwin College is a career training school in Connecticut. Located in East Hartford, it originally opened in 1962 as the Data Business Institute. As a small training academy, it offered courses in secretary science, accounting, and general business. Students could also make connections with the companies and business owners in the surrounding areas, which helped them find jobs before they graduated. The institute became a nonprofit college in 2004, which led to it offering associate degree programs and adopting the Goodwin College name. Goodwin received accreditation in later years and earned approval from the state to create bachelor’s programs and later graduate programs.

Though the college focuses heavily on career training programs, it also offers programs for students who have some experience. Those programs provide working students with the option of taking evening classes and classes online. The college took steps in 2005 to restore an old oil dumping ground with help from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which will become a new campus once the cleanup finishes. Goodwin College set aside space on its campus for the Connecticut River Academy, which offers technical classes for high school students.

Goodwin College Accreditation Details

Goodwin College has the regional accreditation that lets students transfer in and out of its programs and get the financial aid that they need. That accreditation comes from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). It also has accreditation from the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). Some of the career training programs offered by the college have accreditation too, including its nursing, occupational therapy, dental assisting and medical assisting programs.

Goodwin College Application Requirements

As some classes start every 7.5 weeks, Goodwin College doesn’t have specific admissions deadlines. Some programs allow students to start in the middle or at the beginning of the month. The main requirements for undergrads include an application and an application fee of $50. Those students must also interview with one of its admissions counselors and sign a document that states they have a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate. The college may ask for a GED score or a high school transcript. Those who plan to take classes on the Goodwin campus will also need to provide immunization records that show they have their MMR vaccines. If they do not have their vaccines, the college can refer to them to a facility to get their immunizations.

Graduate students must also meet some requirements, including an application and a $50 application fee. The college can provide students with fee waivers. They also need to provide a resume and a transcript that shows they have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students applying to the MSN program need a valid and clean nursing license. The college also asks that they write a personal statement of between 800 and 1,000 goals that explains all their nursing and career goals. Students applying to the MSOL program need to submit a letter of intent of at least 50 words and two letters of recommendation.

Students will need to fill out the FAFSA and make sure that they use the Goodwin code to show where they will attend school. Their aid packages can include a Pell grant and a student loan from the federal government, a state government grant, and college scholarships. The college also offers financial aid for graduate students and allows those students to use loans.
