About Fayetteville State University
Fayetteville State University originated on November 29, 1867, when Robert Simmons registered the deed to build the General O.O. Howard School for teaching Black youth. In 1887, the General Assembly voted to publicly acquire it and make it the State Colored Normal School. In 1899, Principal E.E. Smith added another 50-acre tract for campus expansion. In 1921, it was renamed the State Normal School for the Negro Race. In 1933, the Elementary Education B.S. became its first bachelor’s program. Six years later, it became known as Fayetteville State Teachers College. In 1959, President Rudolph Jones broadened the curriculum beyond teaching. On July 1, 1969, Fayetteville State University was officially born. In 1972, FSU joined the University of North Carolina System. The next year, FSU launched the Fort Bragg Education Center for an Associate of Arts. In 1994, the Educational Leadership Ed.D. debuted as its only doctorate. Enrollment at Fayetteville State University is classified as “minimally difficult” by Peterson’s though only 2,803 of the 4,130 Fall 2018 applicants were triumphant for 68 percent acceptance. First-year Broncos must complete an eligible high school curriculum with four English and four math courses included. Equivalency GED subject tests are permissible if scored over 145 each.
