About Drexel University
Located in the heart of the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia, Drexel University offers access to a wealth of career opportunities after graduation, and provides students with a campus experience that is invariably colored by the city’s rich history. Philadelphia philanthropist and financier Anthony J. Drexel, founding father of Drexel University, can be said to be responsible for Drexel’s tradition of innovation. Mr. Drexel had a very clear vision: establish an institution of higher learning that would serve the developing needs of the rapidly growing Philadelphia area and give local students the advantage they needed to reach their dreams; core values set forth by Mr. Drexel that even to this day continue to guide the University he established.
It wasn’t until 1891 with the founding of Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry that Mr. Drexel’s vision was finally realized. It was originally a non-degree-granting institution, but after 13 years, the expanding university began offering a bachelor of science degree, and the then 18 departments that comprised Mr. Drexel’s university were reorganized into four schools.
Then, in 1927, Pennsylvania granted Drexel University the ability to offer a master of science degree, and finally in 1965, a Ph.D. degree program.
Drexel University’s cooperative education program is the cornerstone of the university’s career preparation model. First introduced at Drexel in 1919, the cooperative education program has become a central element of the educational experience at Drexel. The concept is simple but brilliant: to gain a better understanding of the career field they are training for, students alternate between periods of study and periods of full-time employment in their chosen field. The university’s curriculum is constantly evolving, and has been since its inception, and today the university is made up of 15 colleges and schools.
Drexel University Accreditation
In addition to being accredited by the MSCHE (Middle States Commission on Higher Education), most of Drexel’s schools and degree programs have acquired additional accreditation. Drexel’s Architecture program is one of the few part-time evening programs accredited by NAAB (National Architectural Accrediting Board) and the Earle Mack Law School gained full accredidation from the American Bar Association in August of 2011. The interior design program at Drexel is accredited by the CIDA, which is the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, the undergraduate engineering program is accredited through the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the BS program in Chemistry is certified by the American Chemical Society, and every program offered through the Bennet S. Lebow College of Business is additionally accredited through the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Drexel University Admission Requirements
Admissions requisites are different depending on the degree program, but generally speakin,g the university is looking for students with high school coursework that best prepares students to succeed in the area of study they choose at the college level.
For the undergraduate engineering degree programs, for example, students should have completed a minimum of four years of mathematics at Algebra level and above, at least one year of chemistry with lab work, and at least one year of physics with lab work. Additionally, all prospective students applying to the university must also submit standardized test scores, though there is some flexibility as to which test scores are accepted. Those interested in applying to Drexel University must submit standardized test scores for one of the following:
- SAT Reasoning Test
- Two AP Exam Scores
- Two SAT Subject Test Scores
- ACT Exam
- International Baccalaureate Diploma or Two IB Higher Level Exam Scores
- National Exam Results
Prospective students who speak another language other than English as their native language must also submit test scores for the TOEFL, PTE, or IELTS to prove competency in the English language. If a non-native English speaking student scored a minimum of 27 on the ACT English section, however, they do not need to provide additional test scores. Additional requirements include high school or college transcripts where applicable and a completed application.
Drexel University Tuition and Financial Aid
As of 2018, the cost of attending Drexel University is less than $18,000 per term. Once enrolled at Drexel University, students are automatically eligible to receive scholarships such as the Drexel Merit Scholarship, the Westphal Portfolio Scholarship, the Drexel Global Scholar Program, the Drexel Legacy Scholarship, ROTC scholarships, the Sister City Scholarship, and a host of private scholarships.
