About Fort Hays University
Although the Kansas Legislature initially planned the Fort Hays Experimental Station in 1889, the normal and agricultural school, which was designed to educate residents of a reservation in the area, the school did not open until 1899. On the abandoned Fort Hays Army Post, the state also established the Kansas Normal School to educate teachers as well as the experimental station.
Although the plan was to make use of the old army fort and the first classes were held there, the community wanted to relocate the school closer to town and donated more than 4,000 acres for the campus. When the campus was constructed, it completely absorbed the town of Hays.
In 1914, the school name changed to Fort Hayes Kansas State Normal School and, in 1923, became Kansas State Teachers College. In honor of its original location, the name was changed again in 1931 to Fort Hays State College. When the school gained university status in 1977, the final name became Fort Hays State University.
Today, approximately 15,000 students are enrolled at Fort Hays State University.
